Forget Plastic: Why silicone containers are better for your family

14 Jun 2017 13:36:05

Forget concrete jungles, we live in plastic containers. Wherever we look we can see bags, food packaging, food containers, bottles, even cutlery and cups - it’s almost unavoidable. Of course, thanks to its abundance, plastic is cheap, convenient and in our kitchens. I can barely imagine a world with it.

Plastic first became available in the early 20th century.1 It was revolutionary, and was soon developed to make food storage simpler. By the mid-1940s our kitchens were filled with plastic pots, boxes, and tubs. Of course, we’re all well aware of the negative environment impact it has, and most of us try to avoid using disposable plastic where possible. But many are unaware that plastic - especially that which is in contact with our food - might well be directly harmful to our health, as well.

Numerous studies have shown that there are health risks associated with Bisphenol A (BPA)2 - a chemical commonly found in plastics we use in our homes and kitchens. Considering that it might have effects on hormones and health, this worries us a lot.

But thanks to new technology, things are beginning to move on and there is an alternative. We’re going to show why we prefer the natural and 100% recyclable alternative - silicone.

Silicone means convenience and durability

There is a better and more convenient alternative to plastic - and that’s a type of rubber called silicone. Silicone tubs, like their plastic counterparts, are easy to store, but they are also far more flexible - and therefore more durable.

Unlike plastic, silicone tubs are odourless and do not transfer flavours to the food you store inside them. So if you are using silicone containers, you’ll have no strange smells or tastes when you finally eat that pasta you put in the fridge.

Another benefit of silicone over plastic is its stain-resistance. We’ve all got some mangy old and discoloured plastic tubs in our drawers. You’ll have noticed that turmeric, curry, even food colouring can all ruin the appearance of your plastic tubs, but silicone containers will not stain - no matter what you put inside them.

What’s more, if you put plastic in the microwave you are in danger of melting it, thanks to its relatively low heat resistance of 150°C max. Most silicone containers, however, do much better, staying solid and heat resistant right up until 230oC.3

Thanks to these properties, your silicone containers will stay in good condition for longer, and will therefore provide you with a lot more value for money.

Silicone is better for the health of your family

As you probably know, plastic is very often made from crude oil - and that is not very good for our health. In fact, there are a number of serious health concerns4 related to our use of plastic in the home.

Frankly, we have enough to worry about in our daily lives, without also having to contend with the fact that plastic food containers could also be harmful. While some plastic is certainly safe, a number of peer-reviewed investigations have found that plastics containing the chemical BPA can cause problems with our reproductive systems, our brain and heart health, as well as many other potential issues, according to Life Without Plastic.5

Scientific American backs this up, reporting that any exposure to BPA could have consequences for your health.6 Worryingly, one study found that approximately 93 percent of Americans have BPA in their urine7 , and some in their breast milk.8

Of course, we all suffer from information overload, and when you hear something like that, it’s sometimes just easier to ignore it. However, by using silicone products instead, you can greatly reduce your family’s exposure to risk.

Health Canada9 assures us that silicone will not react with any food or drink you put inside it and will not emit any dangerous fumes. In other words, silicone, which is mostly made from non-toxic silica, is considered to be completely non-hazardous to our health.

Forbes describes10 silicone kitchenware as being “the perfect material for eco-friendly and non-toxic baby products in particular.”

Silicone is better for the environment too

As we touched on before, silicone is a very different type of material to plastic. While plastic is often made from crude oil - a fossil fuel, which is both expensive and environmentally damaging to extract - silicone is made from silica, a common and non-toxic mineral.

When plastic is thrown away or breaks down in the environment, it releases chemicals that can damage the environment and poisoning animals that accidentally digest it. Silicone, in contrast, is completely inert. While not biodegradable, silicone can easily be recycled if you take it to the right facility.

The other point in favour of silicone, again, is its durability. While plastic certainly won’t last you a lifetime, your silicone rubber containers can. If you’re fed up with creating so much rubbish and waste, like we are, silicone is the responsible and environmentally-friendly choice.

Without a doubt, when compared to plastic, silicone comes out on top. It is more durable and convenient, it’s better for our health and for the planet. Try silicone as an alternative to plastic and we’re certain you won’t be disappointed.
